I sat down at the movie theater to watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day with my mind empty. I fully intended to unwind from a day of thinking about science with some big-screen comic book fun. This was superhero escapism distilled, a story about a plucky nerd who wakes up one day with superpowers and a penchant for swinging past Manhattan skyscrapers. Sign me up.

You can imagine my surprise when that same tenacious lead – Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) – burst my escapist bubble with dialogue about RNA. My worlds quickly began to collide.

Something readers may not know is that well before my PhD, I began my career in journalism covering film and television. I even studied film as an undergraduate. Yet over the course of my career, I’ve rarely seen these domains overlap. When they do, I try to ignore the finer details of technobabble on the big screen so that I can suspend my disbelief. I also rarely bring scientific accuracy into my film and TV reviews, lest I be accused of being a fuddy-duddy killjoy. (Sorry, Neil DeGrasse Tyson.)
