Ember Island Airwaves: Episode 6

Well, here we are. Perhaps the best season of The Legend of Korra to date has come to its inevitable conclusion. Josh and I were spectacularly wrong about most of our predictions, but the finale generated some fascinating speculation about Book 4. Will Korra ever be able to access her past lives again? Has Suyin finally esablished her allegiance to the good guys? What role will the newly-named Kuvira play next season?

Along with these questions, Josh and I imagine a world where Tenzin passes and Jinora takes up the mantle as the leader of the airbenders. We also debate the merits of the Red Lotus as a sprawling organization versus the small, concentrated, 4-person squad we’d come to know. Finally, we delve into Korra’s current wheelchair-bound condition and the history of disability representation in the Avatar franchise.

Also, please forgive the puns. They happened and we were powerless to stop them. ~ Søren

Note that this podcast will contain spoilers up through the Book 3 finale. As always, you can subscribe to Ember Island Airwaves using iTunes. Alternatively, you can listen to the episode online or download it here. Happy listening!

More information about the mercury disease (Minamata) mentioned in the podcast can be found on Wikipedia. The interview where Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino discuss Zaheer’s airbending prowess is on IGN’s Youtube channel. Finally, a visual comparison of these Korra episodes with “Crossroads of Destiny” and “Sozin’s Comet” was uploaded to Imgur.

How did you feel about the “Enter the Void” and “Venom of the Red Lotus”? Did you see the ending coming? And what do you think will happen next season? Do you think the Beifongs can help fill the power vacuum in Ba Sing Se? Let us know in the comments below!
